Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham South Hill

I have family in the area and visit at least once, sometimes twice a year. Considering this was a newer hotel I expected more. The staff overall was friendly and professional, including the housekeeping staff I spoke with. However, I was disappointed in the cleanliness of the room. The carpet was not clean and I had to cover the chairs with a towel before sitting in them. Not what I expected.

We had planned to drive farther but highway lane closures due to hurricane clean up cost is valuable time. We were tired when we reached the Virginia welcome station, looking for advice on a place to stay the night. There was a counter display for this hotel advertising a discount. I use the hotel app so I checked the price, which was higher than I usually go. But reviews were good and with few other options, we drove on. I should have booked through the app to save time and lock in the cost. We learned that skilled laborers working on the new Microsoft data storage facilities being built nearby stay there. Our room was clean and we felt safe. The advertised hot breakfast was fact -- French toast sticks, eggs, sausage, creamed chipped beef and biscuits. Also breakfast sandwiches heat n eat, yogurt, pastries and waffles you make yourself. The workmen had cleared out early leaving the buffet mostly to ourselves. Lots of other eating places nearby, too, with easy off/on the highway.

Room clean, bed comfortable, plenty of choices for breakfast and convenient parking. This was a last minute traveling hotel reservation for my brother and I traveling around east coast to visit family in NJ, NY and VA. Getting tired on night from driving all day decided to take a rest. Good decision even though a little more expensive than I thought it should be.

Disappointing Stay with Several Issues We stayed at Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham South Hill for three nights and encountered multiple problems that made our stay very unpleasant. 1. The elevator was out of service during our entire stay, despite being told it would be fixed. My wife and I had to carry two large suitcases, a carry-on, and two backpacks up to the fourth floor using the stairs. When we asked if there were rooms available on a lower floor, we were told there weren’t any. The front desk did not offer any assistance either, which was very disappointing. Due to this, I hurt my back, and it’s still bothering me a week later. 2. We found a dirty, wet paper towel ball in the microwave, which was unhygienic and unacceptable. 3. The bathtub drain was clogged, and the water drained very slowly, making it uncomfortable to shower. 4. The fire stairwell was also dirty, and it didn’t seem like it had been cleaned in a while. 5. The pillows and mattress were incredibly soft and uncomfortable. They felt cheap and offered no support. 6. The window in the room couldn’t be opened to let in fresh air, which made the room feel stuffy. Overall, we were very disappointed with our stay and would not recommend this hotel.

The atmosphere was very quiet and I was able to sleep after 12 hour shifts. Front desk pleasant and the overall hotel feels very welcoming. I will definitely stay here again.
