This historic boutique hotel has a great location. Shops, restaurants, parks and other sites are within walking distance. The hotel is beautifully decorated and has a lovely staff who are super pleasant and helpful. Even the buffet breakfast was exceptional. The building dates back to 1850 and was originally the home of a prominent Portsmouth family. The public rooms are inviting, and the historic woodwork and unique decorations are noteworthy. There is a bar and even a chandelier in the shape of an old boat. We also appreciated that they kept baked snacks, coffee and tea available.

This place was as if AirBnB and a bed and breakfast had a baby. Quirky, unique, boho, warm and inviting with many small touches and amenities that made our stay comfortable and memorable. Carma and the other staff were wonderful and very welcoming. They were more like conscientious "inn keepers" than "front desk staff". Wonderful decor and cozy spaces throughout to relax and unwind. Cute bar downstairs with pool table, fireplace and sitting area upstairs, so many little nooks and crannies to read or play games like Jenga, checkers or chess, etc. lots of comfortable seating options. Kitchen open at all hours for coffee, tea, etc which was super nice. Good European style continental breakfast in the morning. Is it a standard neutral palette, predictable, sterile, industrial space? No. But we like to go with the flow and it was perfect for us and I would definitely stay here again!! Also good location with free parking and walking distance to local restaurants. Highly recommend!

A hotel from times gone by. Comfortable common areas to mingle with other guests. Tastefully decorated fusion of modern amenities with an antique atmosphere. Pillows like clouds in our guest room! We didnāt get to enjoy the bar when it was open, but snuck down after breakfast (a lovely spread of pastries and charcuterie complete with espresso) for a game of chess. We were hoping to return before our departure for a game of billiards but ran out of time. We stayed only one night but will be back as soon as we can to hopefully stay a little longer!

Loved everything! Multiple rooms to chill and meet other travelers. Loved the fireplace room with the ship chandelier and having a cozy drink and reading about Portsmouth. Breakfast was good with multiple beverages. Had a great night sleep and loved exploring the town.

The Hotel Portsmouth is an excellent place to stay. Much more like an inn than a hotel and while the rooms were outstanding for us and our friends, the staff were wonderful and a joy to be engaged with....always helpful, and always pleasant. It's a comfortable and quiet environment, and the location is perfect in the historic heart of the city. We also loved the breakfast making for a great way to start our day.

Hotel History Built in 1881 as the home of John E. Sise and his family, 40 Court Street is a classic example of a Queen Anne Victorian architecture. The Stick Style mansion is located in historic Haymarket Square and is a monument to Victorian success. Later owned by one of the Sise daughters and her husband Alfred Gooding, the antiquarian minister of the South Church -who doubled the size of the original house-, the mansion was expanded again in 1985 and opened as the Sise Inn. An elaborate, historically sensitive, six month renovation of the property was completed in April 2014 prior to re-opening as The Hotel Portsmouth.
