I will first opine that the hotel amenities and performance have declined since my last stay here in 2014. The pipes loudly hammered away each time someone in the hotel engaged a shower, even waking me one night to what I thought was the sound of thunder. Plumbing issues even impacted one of our group’s rooms so there was no water – of any temperature – one morning . This is inexcusable in a budget hotel, much less an alleged 4-star hotel. The final negative was the 3 am experience on the morning of March 6th. Mother and I shared a room. Mother arranged for an extra night for March 5th so we could enjoy the city one more day. She traveled with a printed confirmation from the hotel. I confirmed the extra night with the front desk at our arrival on February 28 and again on March 2nd and March 5th. I sought the latter confirmation because housekeeping showed up to clean the room, confused that we hadn’t checked out. At 3 am on March 6th, we awakened to loud, repeated pounding on our room door. When I asked who was outside, without opening the door, I was told ā€œpolice.ā€ I immediately thought there was a fire in the building and we hadn’t heard the alarm so cracked the door. The man outside repeated he was ā€œpoliceā€ and told me ā€œYou aren’t supposed to be here!, You have to leave!ā€ I told him we had paid for an extra night and he responded that we had to ā€œget dressed and talk to the girl downstairs.ā€ He produced no identification and was wearing clothing that appeared to have the NOLA police crescent insignia. Mother and I got dressed and, although she didn’t want to leave the room, fearing we would be locked out, she gathered her printed confirmation to present to ā€œthe girlā€ downstairs and we headed for the elevator. When the elevator door opened, the same man who told us he was police, was there to tell us that we didn’t have to come downstairs. Mother and I insisted we talk to the person who called the police to roust two old ladies from the room– however mistaken she was. Once in front of ā€œthe girlā€, Jamie, Mother attempted to present her printed confirmation and Jamie refused to even look at it, saying that her housekeeping records showed we were to have vacated the room on March 5th. She never apologized and vehemently denied calling the police saying that the man was the hotel’s security person. Mr. Police also denied identifying himself as police. By this time, Mother– 94 years old – was shaking like a leaf with the adrenalin and lack of sleep to the point that I was concerned she was about to have a stroke. I kept asking her to please calm down, that I was afraid she would have a stroke. As an aside, when Mother took her BP at the return to the room 40 minutes later, it read 197/120. I thank God that this egregious screw-up by an insensitive and unskilled hotel employee didn’t result in a medical emergency! Unrepentant and uncaring, Jamie would only offer Mother the first name of the manager, Justin, who would be on duty at 7 am. Apologizing repeatedly, Justin told both of us he would add points to each of our IHG accounts and he would have the General Manager call Mother. Of course, no one called and no points appeared in either of our accounts. To make a long story shorter, with much diligence, Mother has since been able to contact someone, at least at the sub-director level, within IHG to receive a piddly compensation – and profuse apologies – for this event. Although I have talked to Guest Relations several times since 3/6, no points have been added to my account. I made a final call to Guest Relations on 4/15 after another promise on 3/28 to have the points added to my account and someone from the hotel call me. I have shared this horrible experience with many of my friends, several review sites and with the organization who booked 50+ rooms with this hotel for the last week of Carnival. I'm not holding my breath I will ever receive a call or the promised points and I will never stay at this hotel again in my life.

We had a one-night stay here prior to embarking on American Cruise Lines the next day. I reached out to a manager ahead of time by e-mail to request an upgrade as an IHG Platinum and was very pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a suite. The suite was quite large, with a full sitting room and two bathrooms. While the hotel could probably use a renovation in the not-too-distant future, I certainly appreciated the hotel's generous recognition of its IHG elite guests.

What an absolutely lovely stay we had at the InterContinental! We have stayed in most of the hotels in the city over the past 15 years, but continue to return here because of the people, the amenities and the great food. As InterContinental Ambassadors, they throw in a very good breakfast with eggs to order. Our compliments to Curtis, the egg chef extraordinaire; and we also really appreciated the attentive and caring service given by Kathleen, Sohail, Pedro, and Issita. One of their hotel breakfast crew has been there over 33 years! That says a lot for the hotel management that their people stick with the organization. We also got a very pleasant upgrade, and are very thankful to Mark and Iyana for their courteous, professional and prompt service at the front desk. We were so happy with the room we arrived in! It made our business trip a real pleasure! We made it to Trenasse for dinner and the Oysters and red fish were scrumptious! It is a very high quality seafood restaurant right off the lobby, and well worth a visit. If you just wanna taste the options, they have a happy hour with a nice selection of appetizers to try.

I knew it would be a long weekend when there was an issue with the reservation. Nice lobby with very dated rooms. Peeling upholstery on chairs, rusting hardware, empty minibar, shower knobs that fall off. Definitely not up to Intercontinental standards. Management is aware and less than apologetic about the conditions. They gave our room key to another guest who entered the room and used my cell. It was not a pleasant or relaxing experience.

I’ve rated this review three stars as overall this was a disappointing stay and not what I’d expect from an InterContinental, especially as I’d also been able to use an IHG Confirmed Suite upgrade voucher. On the morning after checking in to Suite 1444, I noticed that the inside of the minibar was warm, so when I popped out for the day, I mentioned this to the receptionist. Despite seeing her pick up the phone to maintenance as I was leaving, nothing was done about this and so the following morning I mentioned it again to a different staff member. She actually told me that the minibars weren’t maintained by the hotel, and that the third party did not work on weekends, but she would email them to take a look the next day when they were onsite. Of course, this didn’t happen and the problem was never addressed. I was offered the loan of a fridge, but thinking the issue would end up being fixed, I declined. On reflection, given there is so much unused cupboard space in the suites, why not install fridges in those as standard? Having used both decaf coffee pods, I had to catch up with the housekeeper in the corridor to ask him to replace them after the suite had been cleaned. When I checked in, I was also told I’d be provided with a fresh bottle of water each day. That in fact only happened on one of the other four days. The walls are paper-thin. For three of my four nights, there was a family in the next room with a screaming baby, though the cot might well have been in my room. Fortunately, their room adjoined the living room in my suite and with the bedroom door closed, that did muffle the crying. Regrettably though, looking at the floor plan, it seems that the bedrooms in the suites at this hotel have connecting doors to the room on the other side. I dislike connecting rooms with a passion, as they mean all soundproofing has been lost and it was no exception here. The guest next door did seem to change each night, with some louder than others. And to reinforce the lack of a seal between the rooms, I had to use two pillows to stop the light from the other room from spilling under the door into mine. For the latter three days and nights of my stay, some horrendously loud noise kicked in from outside - either from down in the alleyway or up on the roof - that droned on and on 24/7. It was really bad in the living room, though again, shutting the bedroom door did help to reduce the volume. Then around 5.30am on my penultimate morning, it got quieter, only to return at full volume about 6.30pm. It only ceased completely at 3.10pm on my last day, just as I was about to check out at 4pm. The silence was blissful. Whatever this noise is, the hotel needs to address it. And even though my room was not near the elevators, you could here the ping ping ping from them most of the day. Even another guest on the floor commented on that to me. The hotel has two restaurants, both of which disappointed. It seems that only one belongs to the hotel, and the menu at Pete’s - which is more a bar that serves food - is minimal and fits onto one narrow side of paper. I struggled to find much to interest me, though I understand that’s down to personal preferences, but it was certainly not the broad menu you’d expect to find at an InterContinental hotel. The wait staff are very friendly and personable though, and apologetic when they ran out of two of the white wines during my stay. The other restaurant is not affiliated to the hotel and despite what the hotel information sheet said about having to show your ID before charging meals to your room, the waiter was adamant you couldn’t, but had to pay them directly. Whilst the menu here was broader, I still found there wasn’t much for me. I persevered though, to avoid having to walk out of the CBD to find alternatives. At Pete’s I also used my IHG Diamond Elite breakfast vouchers to choose both a la carte menu items and the buffet, and all were good. The weekday team were however less attentive, preferring to stand around chatting together - even singing along with the music - than replenishing coffees and juices. Taking away the issues with noise, the suite itself was a very good size and the bed and bedding very comfortable, though the plug in the bath needs looking at as it didn’t stop the bath water from slowly draining away. As this was a vacation trip where I saw all I wanted to, and my business would never take me to New Orleans, it’s unlikely I will make a return trip here, but should I come back, I would look to stay instead at either IHG’s Hotel Indigo, Voco, Kimpton or Crowne Plaza. There were simply too many service and property failings to make me return here.
