We had to go to Rome, GA recently for a funeral and decided to stay at the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham, since my wife's sister and her husband were staying there as well. The good: The Hawthorn is about a block off the old downtown shopping district, which has quite a number of restaurants, bakeries, book stores, and the like. Parking is free and pretty easy acess to the hotel. The room we had overlooked the river, which was quite nice; the bed was fairly comfortable and the TV had a pile of channels on it. The restaurant/bar inside the hotel had good food and good drinks (though a bit on the expensive side). The not-so-good: The layout of the hotel, built in an 1890s warehouse, is a bit bizarre with two 2nd floors. My in-laws were on the "other" 2nd floor in a suite, which was quite nice, but one of the floors was a bit angled. The directions to rooms and elevators was a bit sparse, to say the least; it took a bit to figure out where our room was. Our room was comfortable enough, but you can tell that Wyndham (or maybe the franchisee) is cheaping out on supplies inside, as we had ONE tiny bar of Dove soap for both the bathroom sinks AND the tub/shower combo. The Dove shampoo and conditioner bottles were also tiny and there was no bottle or tube of lotion. The towels WERE nice and thick (not threadbare as some places I've been in over the years). The coffee maker uses the "tray" method, but you only get ONE caffine-laden filter bag and ONE decaf, along with some tea bags. The pictures on their website show that the 2nd and 3rd floors above the check-in desk have planters running down the atrium with bright green plants; when were there, everything was deader than a doornail. The "shop" next to the check-in desk had foodstuffs, but no razors or much else in the way of necessities that might have been forgotten at home. The rooms really need new windows to help keep down the road noise outside. Given the price of the Hawthorn, there's a lot that SHOULD have been available so that they can compete with the Marriott Courtyard that's right across the river within easy walking distance to downtown. The Hawthorn coulda been a contender, but the owner will need to plunk down some more money to make it worth another stay.

Spent one night here for a quick girls' trip for a comedy show. Could not have picked a better location for walking around downtown Rome. Our room at Hawthorne was huge! The balcony overlooking the river was really cool. Staff was friendly and helpful. We are planning a trip back for a girl's weekend and will definitely return here for our stay.

The room was nice and the pillows were fluffy. There was a nice restaurant in the hotel and the food was great. The staff is very friendly. The location is in the historic downstairs area where there are some cute shops and boutiques. Very convenient and walkable.

This is a beautiful property with unique historic beams, brickwork and windows with river views. The staff were exceptional, quickly responding to our requests. It sits adjacent to Broad Street which is filled with restaurants, bakeries, bookstores, spas and boutiques. I highly recommend this property! We liked it so much we stayed an extra night.

It is a very beautiful property, but unfortunately the service was not what we expected. I intentionally chose this hotel instead of options at half the price and booked the suite to be able to use the kitchen. When we arrived the first info was that the kitchen utensils, pots and pans could only be given the next day. We insisted and half an hour later we had a limited set of things. I was surprised about the parking charge and remembered from the website parking was free. I had to return to reception to get the charge removed. The TV in the living room does not work - I.e. impossible to get any channels. Now probably the most annoying part. I donāt have a bathtub at home, so when I travel I like to have one. This is now the second time in a month I get to a hotel which has a bath tub, but no stopper. I called reception, but was astonished that such a simple thing could not be resolved. If you remove the stoppers you need to have them available and if you donāt you have to buy one within a few hours. And equally annoying - the wireless internet was hit and miss. I spent a significant amount of time trying to connect - often with no success. Reception said in that part of the building the internet was not working well. But when close to reception at times I had no internet access. After wasting a lot of time and becoming quite frustrated I switched on the roaming function on my (foreign) phone incurring an extra cost. This was another service I booked and paid for which I did not receive. The kitchen did not have basics such as salt and pepper. Every time I wanted to open a wine bottle I had to go down to the restaurant. In the end, I felt we were working for the hotel rather than the staff for us.
