Chipeta Lodge

We had a beautiful and romantic experience... I highly recommend the Chipeta Lodge. I've been going there for years and it's a place that's hard to beat; price is very affordable, rooms are clean and lovely, beds are SO comfortable (ours had memory foam), staff is nice and helpful, and the outdoor private hot tubs are the bomb. If you stay there, do yourself a favor and go to dinner one block away at Bella Vino (formerly The Bon Ton in Ouray): EXCELLENT fine Italian dining. They have a restaurant there at the lodge and I hear it's very good, too.

The Chipeta Lodge has beautiful rooms and a very nice lap pool. We stayed in a standard King room. The mattress was very comfortable. There were 2 sinks in the room. The room used a gas fireplace as the heating system for the room and is tied into the thermostat. The complimentary breakfast was very nice. it included scones, muffins, yogurt or oatmeal, an egg frittata, and coffee. The restaurant is on the second floor. They have an open-air bar on the top floor. It was nice to have an evening night cap and watch the stars come out. There are heating elements to keep the chill to a minimum. The pool is about 4' deep from end to end, so it is a lap pool. It is heated to a cool, but very comfortable temperature. They have a lot of remodeling and construction in progress. Don't let that scare you away. If you need ADA accommodations, call and make sure they are aware of your needs. We didn't see an elevator to the upstair rooms, restaurant, or bar. It might be there, so call and make sure.

Chipeta Lodge was unique and comfortable for our stay in Ridgway. We stayed in a Spa King room, which was accurately shown in the website photos. The mattress and pillows were extremely comfortable and the room was clean. The hot tub on the private patio was super clean. Our room was a few steps to the rooftop bar where we enjoyed cocktails and excellent live music. The view of the Cimarrons and down valley to Ouray from the bar is amazing. Of note: the wall between the bedroom and bath doesn’t go all the way to the ceiling. One of us considered this a quaint architectural detail, and the other felt he didn’t have enough privacy for bathroom activities. We were very comfortable here and will definitely go back.

We had an overall average experience. The accommodations do not live up to the pricing. I feel that when we booked (we booked over the phone) it should have been disclosed that the spa and the outdoor hot tub would not be available. For the price we paid, everything should have been impeccable. It was not. We had a group staying for a celebratory weekend. I was able to see 3 different rooms. I would have to say mine was more updated than the others. However, there was a sewage smell and the fireplace was broken. On a positive note, the beds were very comfortable. I happened to call inquiring about whether or not the pool would be closed for our stay. (Someone thought they had seen that in an email they recieved). In this phone call I happened to find out they had moved me from the queen suite to a standard queen. When I expressed dismay as we were counting on two beds, they moved me into a room with two kings. So that problem (created by them), they solved. There was poor airflow in my friend’s room and she unfortunately had to open her window to the beautiful view of construction mess. We got our rooms on a slight discount, which was still way overpriced for what we received. I would love to rave about this place because I can see the potential. However, if you want to take the risk of being disappointed by a subpar room book here. I think the people that give 5 stars were probably in the most updated portion of the hotel. We did not try the bar restaurant as the night we would have, it was closed for a private event. This was yet another disappointment. I don’t know that I would return and risk being disappointed repeatedly again.

If you want to avoid the crowds in Ouray Ridgeway is a better option. Room was very nice. Beds are very comfortable. The pool and hot tubs on the balcony are maintained. The rooms are only cleaned by request. The breakfast is very minimal. Coffee and water only for drinks. For $250 a night it’s a little pricey.
